Thailand's political landscape has been significantly shaped by the figure of Thaksin Shinawatra, the country's former prime minister, whose release from prison has sparked intense media speculation and public interest. The question on everyone's mind is whether Thaksin's era in Thai politics is truly over, or if he will find a way to reclaim his influence.
Thaksin's journey to power in 2001 was marked by a bold and ambitious vision for his country. As a self-made billionaire, he sought to transform Thailand, but his methods and goals divided the nation. His parties consistently won elections, even after he was ousted in a coup in 2006. However, the fear of his power and influence among the royalist establishment led to a series of court rulings against his allies, violent street clashes, and another coup in 2014. Despite these setbacks, Thaksin refused to step back, continuing to lead his party from abroad and, after a 'grand bargain', returning to Thailand in 2023 to direct his party's affairs.
The recent turn of events, however, suggests that Thaksin's era may be coming to a close. His release from prison, following a one-year sentence for corruption and power abuses, coincides with a shift in the political landscape. Pheu Thai, his party, suffered its worst-ever result in the February general election, being pushed down to third place by the reformist People's Party and the conservative Bhumjaithai party, which benefited from a surge in nationalist sentiment after the border war with Cambodia. This new political environment presents Thaksin and his party with a unique challenge.
The 'grand bargain' that allowed Thaksin to return to Thailand in 2023 has quickly unraveled, leaving many questions unanswered. Was the conservative establishment always intent on using the courts to cripple his party's governments? Or were they provoked by Thaksin's refusal to stay in the background and his determination to drive his party's agenda? Either way, the mistrust between Thaksin and the Thai conservatives is now likely insurmountable. Even if Thaksin still yearns for a prominent political role, he will almost certainly be barred from achieving it.
In my opinion, the past 25 years in Thailand have indeed been defined by the Thaksin era. However, the recent political developments suggest that this era is coming to an end. Thaksin's release from prison and the changing political landscape present an opportunity for Thailand to move forward and leave the past behind. It is now up to the country's leaders and citizens to decide how to shape a new future, one that is free from the shadows of the past and the influence of a single charismatic leader.
